Google introduced the Google Penguin Update in April of 2012. It caused a lot of trouble for many webmasters out there. The purpose of Penguin keywords was to find out the websites that have used the keywords excessively. It also targeted link building in the websites. There has been such a huge impact of this update, that it has altered the whole concept of search engine optimization. However, there are some useful tips that a webmaster can use to safely market their website and improve its ranking.

I think the problem with your guide while although it's all true, it's also the reason people started to look for shady methods to increase their SEO in the first place.

Sometimes, doing it the "right" way doesn't get you anywhere on the next with the search engines because everyone is doing it.

I would have to disagree with this because I've tried both methods black hat and white hat. I've gotten further in the search by using white hat techniques. Most companies and website owners don't want to wait on white hat techniques because they take a long time. They always want the easy way out, so they look for the black hat techniques.

As usual, unique content is the key. I don't know why some people bother SO much about SEO when original content can take then further than any backlinking feature.

Great article by the way, I found it easy to understand even though I'm still relatively new to SEO. And loved the image!

You're right original and helpful content is all they need, but they insist on wasting money on backlinks. It's pointless if you ask me just take that budget that you were using for backlinks, and invest it in a decent writer. Then you'll see your website soar to the top of the ranks. The key to ranking in Google is to write high quality content consistently. You can't just have one or two good articles, and think that you're going to have authority in your niche.

Exactly. The so called 'SEO gurus' will charge you enough to pay a good writer for a few original articles. Or, you can even write the articles yourself and get them proofread, just in case. That would save you a lot in investment and would get you a better PR.

One technique we used to try out from time to time was to use Paid Search listings to draw attention to our content. If we added a new article that was about a timely topic in our industry, we would set up a small campaign to target the buzz words around the news item and just run it temporarily.

We knew this wasn't going to convert like our other campaigns, especially since we weren't sending them to one of our landing pages optimized for PPC, and also because the person was probably not in "buying" mode when they were doing that search - but it did help us get some brand recognition alongside the big news sites. Also, the bids on these terms were relatively cheap.
